Linguistics and speech technology: from theory to tools to theory

Aims, objectives, location and articulation
The aim of the Summer School is to bring students in the humanities closer to a technical-scientific approach to language analysis and to provide students in technology the opportunity to understand the need for in-depth knowledge of linguistic information in order to work in speech technology.
Target participants
The school is addressed to students and young graduates in humanities or in technology who want to get to know the world of speech technologies. Participants may be:
- university students and/or young graduates in the humanities (CFUs acquired in linguistics, where applicable L-LIN/01 or L-FIL-LETT/12) or in computer science and technology (e.g. computer science or electronic engineering). Students must have obtained their degree no more than two years ago; they may be enrolled in three-year degree courses, provided they have already acquired at least 60 CFU.
- PhD and post-doctoral students (who have obtained their degree by no more than two years);
There are 30 places available, 15 of which are reserved for students from the University of Salento. In order to ensure social inclusion and real gender equality, 2 places will be reserved for disabled people and equal participation of all gender components will be ensured. If the number of reserved places is not reached, the available places can be allocated to other participants.
Selection will take place on the basis of a curriculum vitae et studiorum (European CV format) and a motivation letter. A minimum level of knowledge of English is required, also attested by self-declaration (minimum level B1 of CEFR). At equal evaluation, the order of application (date of submission) will be taken into consideration.
The school foresees 50 hours of activities (40 of activities during the school and 10 for the realization of a final report) and the recognition of 2 CFU. The list of the University of Salento courses that will acknowledge the CFUs will be provided by mid May on the Summer School web page provided by CEDAT 85 (https://www.aisv.it/en/training/).
Participation to the school is free of charge. Participants will be partially reimbursed for travel expenses (with the exception of those who are domiciled within the province of Lecce) and will not have to pay for lunches during the school. Attendance is compulsory. A final certificate will be issued to the participants.

Application and deadlines
The application must be submitted no later than May 27 2022, by filling the attached template (please use the file "Facsimile_domanda.pdf"; its content is translated in the file "Translation_facsimile_domanda.docx") and sending it to the following address:
The application must be signed by the applicant in original, under penalty of exclusion, and sent together with a copy of a valid ID, curriculum vitae and a short letter of self-presentation and motivation.
The call for applications is published on the Salento University's institutional website www.unisalento.it in the section "Announcements and Competitions - Training Projects".
By submitting the application, the applicant:
- assumes responsibility, pursuant to Articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree 445/2000, for the statements made and the files attached to the application, in full awareness of the criminal penalties arising from false statements and/or mendacious declarations;
- declares that he/she is aware that the collection and processing of personal data will take place in compliance with national and EU law, as well as with the principles of fairness and protection of confidentiality and exclusively for purposes related to all the fulfillments related to the full implementation of the administrative relationship with the University.

Selection modalities
The school is addressed to students and young graduates in humanities or in technology (max. 30) who want to get to know the world of speech technologies. Participants may be:
- university students and/or young graduates in the humanities (CFUs acquired in linguistics, where applicable L-LIN/01 or L-FIL-LETT/12) or in computer science and technology (e.g. computer science or electronic engineering). Students must have obtained their degree no more than two years ago; they may be enrolled in three-year degree courses, provided they have already acquired at least 60 CFU.
- PhD and post-doctoral students (who have obtained their degree by no more than two years); The school provides 50 hours of activities, corresponding to 2 CFUs (University credits). Five modules are included (all topics will be addressed in English).
Participants will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Curriculum vitae et studiorum (European CV format), maximum score 60 (a minimum level of knowledge of English is required, also attested by self-declaration (minimum level B1 of CEFR);
- Letter of motivation, maximum score 40;
- Order of application (date of submission).
Only applications from applicants who have attested, including through self-declaration, a level of English language proficiency that corresponds, as a minimum, to level B1 of the CEFR will be evaluated.
The evaluation of applications for admission to the School will be carried out by a Commission, appointed by the Director of the Department and composed of three internal members of the University of Salento.
The list of those admitted will be published on the University's institutional website https://www.unisalento.it in the section "Notices and Competitions - Training Projects." This fulfills the notification requirements (Article 8 of Law No. 241/90).

Travel by plane
There are two international airports not far from Lecce:
- Brindisi Airport (about 40 km from Lecce)
- Bari Airport (about 150 km from Lecce)
Shuttles bus or train connections to Bari/Lecce are provided (see below).
Car rentals are available in the main Italian airports, including the airports of Brindisi and Bari. This could be a good idea if you wish to join a visit of the Salento and Apulia to the conference.

Travel by train to Lecce
From Rome or Milan take a Eurostar (EC) or Intercity (IC) train; overnight trains are equipped with sleeper cars with couchettes or beds. It takes about 6 hours to reach Lecce from Rome and 10 hours from Milan by train.

Travel by car to Lecce
- On the A14/E55 motorway head in south direction to Bari;
- Take the exit “Bari Nord”;
- Follow signs for Brindisi/Lecce and continue on SS16 straight to its end.
How to move around Lecce
Urban transport system in Lecce
Once you have arrived in Lecce, there are several buses that connect the Lecce Station (Stazione FF SS) and the City terminal to the city centre. Bus tickets can be bought both in the station bar and at the City terminal’s info point.
Nonetheless, the city centre is at a reasonable walking distance from both.

Studi AISV - collana peer reviewed
Studi AISV (ISSN: 2612-226X) è una collana di volumi collettanei e di monografie dedicata alla struttura sonora del linguaggio e alle interfacce con le altre componenti della grammatica e del discorso.
La collana, programmaticamente interdisciplinare, è aperta a molteplici punti di vista e argomenti sul linguaggio parlato e segnato.
Gli ambiti di ricerca includono tutti gli aspetti della produzione, acustica e percezione del parlato, le variazioni sociofonetiche e i cambiamenti storici, l’acquisizione di L1 e L2, i disturbi del linguaggio e della parola, le basi cognitive e neurobiologiche delle rappresentazioni vocali e dell’elaborazione del parlato, le applicazioni tecnologiche, quali ad esempio sintesi da testo e riconoscimento automatico della parola e della voce, fonetica forense, riconoscimento del parlatore.
I manoscritti sono sottoposti a processi di revisione anonima fra pari che ne assicurano la conformità ai più alti livelli qualitativi del settore.
La collana pubblica sia volumi collettanei sia monografie. Per quanto riguarda i volumi collettanei, la cadenza della loro pubblicazione è annuale. Per quanto riguarda le monografie, queste verranno pubblicate secondo l’ordine di accettazione dei manoscritti proposti a Studi AISV.
Tutti i volumi della collana sono liberamente scaricabili dal sito dedicato (link a collana Studi AISV).
